Billykart Kitchen is off and racing

Owner, Operator and Celebrity Chef Ben O’Donoghue has partnered with his wife Dee to open Billykart Kitchen’  – a licensed café in Brisbane’s southern suburb of Annerley opening six days for breakfast and lunch.

Located in the revamped ‘Clifton Hill Store’ amidst the wide tree-lined streets of Annerley, the couple have promised to revive the tradition of an old-fashioned corner store in both name; (the area was in the 1950’s a hotspot for kids to race billykarts down the hills) and nature with this charming 80 seater eatery.

Chef Ben O’Donoghue describes the menu as ‘casual sophistication’ featuring breakfast items like; ‘Aussie Asian Eggs With King Prawns Bacon & Chilli and Date, Apple And Quinoa Bircher Muesli, Roasted Coconut, Hazelnut & Pecans, plus inspired lunch dishes to excite your palate like; Pulled Berkshire Pork Shoulder, Sugar Loaf Slaw & Baja Sauce, Chilli Mussel and Diamond Shell Clams, and a Charcuterie Board With House Made Piccalili.

Billykart Kitchen will soon stock a selection of deli items and Banneton Bakery fresh bread, milk, papers and other speciality foods for takeaway.

After dark on Fridays the kitchen stays open to serve a special dinner service showcasing a range of diverse cuisines that will depend on the season, what produce is available and possibly even the fancy of chef!

While Ben is a household name as a celebrity chef, television presenter, and author, his wife Dee also boasts an excellent hospitality pedigree having spent her whole career front of house excelling in customer service.

Dee has worked amongst some of the industry’s best names here and in the UK including with Luke Mangan at ‘Salt’ in Sydney, at Notting Hill institution ‘Kensington Place’ and also an impressive stint on the management team to open David Thompson’s Michelin Star awarded ‘Nahm’ at the Halkin Hotel in Belgravia.

Billykart Kitchen is the first time the couple been in business together and both are excited about carving out the direction Billykart Kitchen will take.

“We wanted to work on our own project together and remain completely autonomous in realising our vision,” Ben said.

“The decision to open up a suburban café close to home was made just as much for the enviable lifestyle choices it presents for us and the family, as well as the perfect setting for cooking my favourite style of food – simple yet distinctive cuisine using fresh, local and seasonal produce in funky yet accessible surrounds.

“We see Billykart Kitchen as being a real part of the community and look forward to connecting with all the locals” he said.

The Billykart Kitchen fit-out is designed by ‘Marc&Co’ who have embraced the look and feel of a traditional ‘old Queenslander’. Inspired by low-key suburban aesthetics with pastel coloured walls in traditonal VJ’s, grafitti autumn leaves and bush flora on the concrete floors and even a ‘suburban’ vertical garden on the back wall, the space feels warm and comfortable complete with some vintage style quirky elements and added modern pops of colour.

Ben’s impressive kitchen is fitted by Queensland company Stoddart Manufacturing.

Tuesday – Thursday: 6:30am (kitchen opens from 7.00am) – 5:00pm
